WCAG Testing & Certification
Concept Incarnate can conduct WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) testing for your website or web application. Typically, we would recommend thinking about accessibility in the design phase of a website if possible, but we are willing to join you wherever you are in the process, even if you want to clean up an already released website or application.
It can be a very tedious task, but someone has got to do it and we are up to the task. It takes someone who has an awareness of programming, design, and human interaction to do robust testing.
We can page by page, look for issues where your website does not meet WCAG, and give you an itemized list so that your team can make corrections. Upon changes from your development team per our recommendations, we can re-test for any new issues or missed issues from the first round of testing.
Depending on how your website is set up and the access you grant, we may be able to make some or all of the coding changes needed.
We can test against WCAG A, AA, or AAA, as your needs require. Most commercial companies will normally want to reach WCAG 2.2 AA, while a government entity may want AAA status.
Upon meeting WCAG, we can offer you certification and a conformance claim to post to your website. If you want a certain format or form filled out, we can work with you to fulfill that need.
There is No 1-Click Solution for Accessibility
Just incase anyone is tempted when looking at options, we would highly not recommend any “one click” AI solutions for accessibility. Those gimmicks sweep foundational coding errors under the rug, and do not fix the problem of truly being accessible. With our own testing, they just don’t “patch” things enough to be truly accessible and you would be dependent on subscription services indefinitely, but what they do offer is a false sense of a good job.
We see companies offer ‘one click’ plug-ins or AI bots to fix a website to WCAG, even though they aid in the process, it is not a substitute for clean coding from the get-go and rigorous real person testing. Bots or AIs out there may work to mask WCAG issues present in a website, but we think it is best not to have any issues in the code to begin with; we have seen such offerings not get it quite right.
There is no “magic bullet” to make your website meet WCAG, but with our team grinding through the audit, we can help you meet WCAG, one change at a time.
WCAG Experience
Ellice and the team have experience in WCAG testing and optimization. Ellice typically starts by testing the sites with Windows Narrator, but can also test using other screen reader software. She also tests with an HTML5 outliner and a colour contrast checker. She does all testing manually, as there is NO one-click solution to test and fix issues better than a human trial; it is in fact humans who will be using the site after all.
Ellice has worked to help with accessibility as a team member to re-vamp the City of San Antonio’s website, as an initiative lead at a tech-company, and as the designated team member to test/certify client websites.
If the desire is wanted, we can contract with people with real disabilities to test your website.
Notes:
- There is no “official” certification company, test, or conformance claim of WCAG. WCAG is a mutually agreed to collection of guidelines that have been agreed to.
- For the United States, due to the lack of specific laws about a website meeting ADA complaince, WCAG has become the de-facto standard.
- WCAG is a pass/fail test. It you have 99% of the items meeting WCAG, but one item not, this is considered failed adherence.
Pricing
Due to the nature of testing, this is something that has to be billed at hourly rates. Sales taxes will be added as required by state law on top of service rates.
